A newlywed, first time home buyer couple purchases a circa colonial in New England. This blog follows their adventures during their home ownership. The process looked simple enough and having plaster everywhere in the home with every wall having some sort of crack, I decided to buy a small pack to try out. In our future baby room, where a closet was built circa 'sare a series of exposed cracks on the west exterior wall. This area will eventually be covered by a closet system, so I figured I can't make it look any worse.

You can see the previous owners attempts of sloppy repair along the corner. Following the directions, I drilled my first hole near the crack to locate the lathe behind. With a set spacing between each lathe, I drilled along the crack keeping far enough away not make it bigger, yet close enough for the process to work.

I believe the directions said about an inch to two away. I vacuumed each hole to clean it of all dust and you'll also want to vacuum the floor and other nearby items, plaster dust gets everywhere. Once this was complete, the holes are primed with a chemical within a squeeze bottle, left to sit for 15 minutes, then the glue is pumped into each hole using a caulk gun.

The directions stated that one full pull of the caulk gun's trigger is needed per each hole or until the glue pops out of the hole. That may be overkill.

Filling Existing Walls

On a series of drilled holes, I found myself squeezing two to three pulls of the trigger with no glue being forced back out of the hole. I must have hit a pocket or found a void between the lathe. I believe you could get more out of the kit once you get used to it.

The kit isn't cheap, so making it effectively last is an excellent goal. After filling all the holes, a special washer was screwed into selected holes which, when screwed in, pulls the lathe and plaster back together again while the glue cured.

The directions said that I should give time to allow the glue to dry; I waited a week, just to be sure. Did a little sanding and applied joint compound on the surface to fill the drilled holes and cracks.Skip to main content.

Amazon Renewed Like-new products you can trust. The walls of our century-old home are made of lath and plaster. We knew that we wanted to keep as much of it as possible, which seems to be the atypical route. Getting rid of lath and plaster means that you have an essentially blank slate to put any wiring, duct work and in insulation before dry-walling the walls. Especially when older plaster is in bad repair, it seems to make even more sense.

Tearing down plaster is actually an awful process: It is very messy, extremely heavy, and altogether unpleasant. The worst part, though, is that I really like plaster. Cracks in plaster occur when plaster falls away from the lath, and so the first step is to secure the plaster to the lath. Popular opinion is that they are really and truly awesome. And this is an experiment that you can do for yourself! Get a few tubes of construction adhesive, some random chunks of discarded lath and plaster from your home, and see if you can find a winner.

If you miss the lath, simply mark that hole to avoid it later. Remove debris by vacuuming each of the holes with a Shop-vac, or spraying the holes with compressed air.

Use your caulking gun to put construction adhesive into each hole. Use a putty knife to wipe up any extra glue. Start by stabilizing the wall further from the crack, and work your way in.

We made additional holes instead of using the one with glue in them. Wait at least 48 hours to ensure it is set and then remove the washers.

Apply drywall tape on any surface cracks in the plaster; not only will it greatly help you achieve a smooth wall surface, but it will also help further reinforce the damaged wall.

Apply a messy layer of the joint compound.

Continue to apply and lightly sand when it is try until you achieve a smooth surface. It may be handy to have a damp sponge on hand; it can be a big help to smooth the joint compound. Please do your own research before undertaking this project, and make sure to choose your products wisely! This project is not for the faint of heart: One room has taken as nearly a month of weekends to fix. Mind you, the plaster damage was relatively extensive. However, if I could do it over again I definitely would.
